At Our School Everyone is Equal

On Tuesday 31st January, pupils of Bourne Elsea Park C of E Primary Academy were treated to a fantastic celebration of Equality and Diversity during their Collective Worship.  Our incredible Equality Ambassadors and Student Council had previously taken part in an inspiring workshop led by Just Lincolnshire, an amazing organisation that aims to champion equality, tackling discrimination and celebrating the richly diverse makeup of Lincolnshire. As part of their roles as ambassadors, they now wanted to share their learning about The 2010 Equality Act, the law supporting this battle against discrimination and raise further awareness about the nine Protected Characteristics.  The ambassadors were excited and honoured to also be presenting their invaluable message to Sue Ellis from Just Lincolnshire, who presented them with certificates and lanyards and some of our members of the school’s Governing board, Mr Stephen Farnaby and Mrs Natalie Fox, who were noted and thanked for their work as Agents of Change in our school.  During the presentation, our representatives of equality challenged the school to ‘step into other people’s shoes’ in order to try to see things from the points of view of others, our ambassadors even trying to shuffle across the stage in their teacher’s high heeled shoes and fluffy slippers to illustrate their point!  As well as highlighting the importance of being kind, understanding and respectful to each other, the presenters reiterated that it is against the law to discriminate against anyone with the nine Protected Characteristics.  Head of School, Mrs Skidmore ended the Collective Worship with a story to illustrate how every small act of kindness counts before she awarded the ambassadors with Agent of Change badges for their role in championing UNICEF Article 29, ‘All children have the right to be the best they can’ and Article 19, ‘All children have the right to be protected from harm and to be kept safe’.  The future looks bright in the hands of our Equality Ambassadors!
