Safer Internet Day 2023 – Want to talk about it? Making space for conversations about life online
We supported Safer Internet Day on Tuesday 7th February with the theme ‘Want to talk about it? Making space for conversations about life online’ to promote the safe and responsible use of technology.
Coordinated by the UK Safer Internet Centre, it is a global campaign to promote the safe and responsible use of technology, which calls on young people, parents, carers, teachers, social workers, law enforcement, companies, policymakers, and wider, to join together in helping to create a better internet.
We held collective worships to launch this year’s focus. Our E-Safety Champions helped deliver the collective worship about why talking about what we see and do online is important.
Children in KS1 completed different tasks in each year group based on this year’s theme after reading an E-Safety story. Children in reception focussed on who they could go to if they had a problem online. In year 1 they discussed thinks they can do and like to do online before recapping who they can go to if they have a problem. Year 2 developed this further by discussing what they can do if something scares them online and who they should ask for help.
In KS2 children took part in a range of activities discussing issues they may come across online. Year 3 focussed on what activities online they would need permission for whilst year 4 role played a range of scenarios and explained what they would do to resolve the scenario. Year 5 focussed on online profiles and learnt how to decide if a profile is trustworthy or not. In year 6, children gave online safety advice on different problems children may come across online.
Using the internet safely and positively is a key message that we promote in our schools. Celebrating Safer Internet Day annually provides us with an opportunity to re-emphasise e-safety messages which we teach throughout the year. The message this year of talking about what we see and do online is vital in helping to keep our children safe but also allowing them to enjoy their time online. We really feel committed to our role of empowering children to enjoy their time online safely.
